My article

I am using new models in my article and this means a change in the style of text and language used within the article.

The photos i were going to use originally

I had an issue with these pictures and how they would suit the image of the band. Their is hardly any variety as the photos were done in the studio and i feel the photos could be improved by introducing new models to the frame and changing the image of the magazine to suit a new mix of audience.

The Planned Photoshoot

The people which i am going to use for my photo shoot are going to be Ronan Fitzpatrick and Callum Phelan. These are going to be the two artists used to model Andrew and Clarke from my band "Poor boyz". Ronan Fitzpatrick who is pretending to be Andrew will be main focal point of the band as he is the lead singer and song writer. He will be the main act i will be making the most attention on, this act will be wearing a shirt and jeans while holding a pack of cards with the king of ace at the front of the pack. The connotations between these is that Andrew is the lead singer and this suggests he is the most wanted meterial like the king in packs of cards.

The other part of the band is Clarke. He will be acted out by Callum Phelan and he is the lead singers best mate and at the back of the pack. He will be wearing a cap, jeans and shirt whilst holding a guitar and looking like he is playing the instrument. This will be used to connotate and make sure the audience keep to its focal point of an indie/rock band.

On the feature page will show Andrew holding a guitar trying to fight out a note and start singing a song with Clarke trying to fight the guitar off him. Andrew will be sat down on a chair trying to reminsise a note out of nothing and Clarke will  be trying to pull it away from him. This picture will be used to tell the audience that the "Poor Boyz" are only a young band and that they like to muck around time and time again.

Draft of article

Time of our lives
Exclusive “Poor Boyz” interview with Aaron Phelan

Today is Tuesday 10th January and “Poor Boyz” have just arrived in the studio. Lead singers from the band Andrew and Clarke are thriving from the success of the party which they held to celebrate their new album release “Time of our lives”. This new album is very different compared to their first album and has a much broader appeal whilst still keeping their original up-beat and enjoyable style of music. The mix of rock and love songs will hopefully see them win even more Brits and various awards which came with their first album.

Q. Do you feel you guys can live up to the success of your album “The Debut” with your new album “Time of our lives”?

A. Hell yeah. I’m surprised with how much recognition we won with “The Debut” album. We were shitting ourselves when we heard our names in the best newcomers and best album categories at the Brits. I was also surprised when we beat artists who’ve earned recognition from years of success and novices like our band who only got together 8 years ago and got that elusive record deal only 2 years ago.

Q. We’ve heard that you’re taking your first album “The debut” over the pond and that you’ve earned a contract from Simon Cowell, is this true or is it one of those rumours over twitter?

C. No, No Aaron lad, its true. He approached us after the Brit awards and asked us if we want to spend a year over in America to publicise ourselves. We said yeah but we wanted to be nearer home until we’ve advertised this album but after that we’re gonna be the next big thing over there you know.

Q. Do you feel your Northern routes will make you successful and make your band big over there?

C. Yeah mate, we hope our music appeals to the audience in America. This is because we feel we could mix genres to appeal to the audience, just like what we’ve done with “Time of our lives”

Q. Will you be going Glastonbury this year, despite all of your commitments?

A. Fuck yeah, hopefully we can give the all exclusive single “The rock” which is going to be released just before Glasto. We’ve played there for the last 5 years and we decided to release our music when we were there whilst we were at Glastonbury as they were many music fans who were inspired by our music and that was the inspiration behind the song “Glasto” from “The Debut” album.

C. We all remember that night 5th April 2008 very well and as we were wasted on booze, we knew our time was coming  and we decided to release our debut single 6 months later.

Q. It took you guys almost a year to release “the debut” album. What was the complication behind this?

A. We had a lot of trouble thinking about the material we were going to place on the album. Me, Clarke and the record company were stuck in heated discussions on how much music we were placing in the album.

C. Our initial plan was to put the music we were intending to release all into one album and have it as a downloadable album which you had to buy a card with a code placed into it. However the record company said this was going to be too expensive and inconvenient which meant we had to release a CD because some of our potential audience may be unable to download the music.

A. Fair enough that, but we have to keep to the general publics requirements of releasing an album aswell as a downloadable one.

Q. The first single “Bodies” from your new album was released about two weeks ago and it has risen from 33rd up to 3rd in the charts within two weeks. Are you pleased with the success so far and do you feel it is your best single to date because many radio presenters and members of the public have it down as your best?

A. Well, we felt we could wow the audience further and due to the expectance levels from the music industry because of the amount of awards which we won with the debut album, Me and Clarke feel this could become the one of the most amazing tracks of the year.

Q. And finally, you guys are playing your new single at half time during the Burnley VS Blackburn Rovers League game next week. What was the importance about this game into why you had to perform at Turf Moor?

A. Well, we’ve always wanted to perform at half time during a football match and we feel this was the perfect game to perform our  new single at.
C. Well, I’m a Burnley FC fan and Andrew is a Blackburn fan and we feel this could help fire up the fans and have the inspiration for a Burnley win hopefully, but Andrew will have a different opinion and that opinion is not what I really give a shit about.
A. Do you want to start this discussion about football again Clarke, because I know and you will surely have understood by now that its 33 years and waiting till you have last beat us in the league.

Only time will tell if Andrew, Clarke and the lads manage to pull off another masterpiece like they did with “The debut”. Will they make it Stateside with “Time of our lives or will they be back to scratching up plans for new material in their Lancashire pad like they did with their last album? Our bet is that they will gain even more accolades with the new album and earn enough recognition from America making them the next big thing imported from Britain. Good Luck Lads!

The Band for my magazine

The Band will be called "Poor boyz" who are a young up and coming indie band who are about to release their second album "Time of our lives". The interview will be a feature spread with a large picture in the background and have guitars and other instruments whilst looking like they are about to perform a song. The interview will be a mix of an introductory paragraph and a feature question & answer interview which people will like to read aswell as looking at the eye-catching images which will be used on the feature page. The language used will be informative and creative among the general audience and this will hopefully keep the audience interested.

Callender

The order of date which i will be sorting out my magazine are

8th Feb- 17th Feb : Creation of Mood boards, reasearch ect.
18th Feb: Photo Shoot using the studio and surrounding areas near college

Any Changes to these dates will be posted on blogger.

The types of pictures i am planning to use

In my magazine i will have to choose 5 or 6 images which can be placed within the magazine. On the front cover i will be using an MCU (medium close-up shot) on the front cover with every member of the band members standing side to side or looking straight at the audience, dependent on how good the images are when i am publishing them into the magazine. On the contents page i will be taking individual images of the band and placing them across the page. These shots will be ECU (Extreme Close ups) and these will be close up expressions of different bands which will be featuring in the magazine. These will all be used alongside the text telling us what will be on each page and each pictures tell a topic. They will be one main picture on the page with text on top of the main picture and this will be done in a font of reasonable size and this will be made readable by having a mix of text and a questionaire on each page of the website.

Magazine Names

I am going to let the members of the class pick the name of my magazine. The Genre I am going to aim my magazine at the audience of people who like indie music. I have selected a choice of 5 names which i would like my magazine to be called

Analysis of a magazine feature article

The feature article I will be scanning is from Q magazine, March 2011 issue and this article is about Liam Gallagher (formally of Oasis) with his new band Beady Eye who are about to release their debut album. The Journalistic style of this article suggests that it their is a bit of history talking about previous projects which all the band have been involved in before beady eye were formed. This page on the article is very structured and contains 3 columns of text. 1 and a half columns contain text telling us the introduction and the next column and a half contain the start of an interview which Sylvia Patterson writes and explains in thorough detail.

The language used in the article is very informative and it makes the audience feel as though they are part of the interview and are generally having a conversation with Liam Gallagher and his band mates. Language such as "I don't give a fuck mate" and “I’ve been on strike since I were fuckin’ born” suggests that he doesn’t care about any criticism and is very foul mouth. This sort of language has been used throughout the interview and that gives us the general feel on who Liam Gallagher really is. This also gives us the opinion that the interview taking place in this article is formal as it makes us feel involved in the interview and that we are having a general conversation with the person who this article is about. The use of the swear words within the article suggest his image and that he's from working class Manchester.

The image used on the page of the interview shows the main singer in the band standing up straight and looks like a character you would not want to mess around with on a night out. The image is showing him dressed up in combat gear with his fists clinched outside his pockets and this shows the audience and potential fans that he is still generally fighting for success. The image follows the typical stereotype of "Lads" as it suggests that Liam Gallagher is masculine and very idolised within the general public who have respect for him due to his history in music. The costumes used for the outfit which he is wearing suggests the genre of music his music is aimed at. The big combat coat which looks like something to do with the army suggests that it is iconic to the indie genre.

The Layout of the page is professional and contains columns of text and a picture of the person who are being interviewed interviewed for the article. On the first page of the double feature spread we can see that their has been a lot of text stored into a small space. Sometimes this can be a good thing, but other times it can be deteriorating and may lose interest in the main bulk of the article because of the small size of text used. The structure of the page however allows people to browse the article and read the question and answer section used in the article, this is done to often keep the audience interested as a magazine is not like a book in many ways as people only want to read snippets of articles and look at pictures instead of reading large bulks of text. However this can be a good thing as it can leave space for the picture which was placed in the feature spread. This picture has been done very well and it can be used to create characteristics between the main character (Liam Gallagher) and the rest of the article. This has been done to let the potential readers of this document know who they are reading about and pictures need to be inserted into every page to keep the intended interest of the potential audience.

Target Audience

The target age group for the magazine which i am potentially releasing will be 15-24 years olds who have a general interest in music overall and want to find out more about the artists who are currently within the top 10. The main audience the magazine is aimed at is students who enjoy listening to the charts and enjoy music as a whole. According to my questionaire people liked to listen to Indie style music the most. This is due to the choice in magazines which were stated in my questionaire, the most popular magazine was NME. This is because it is only £1.80 and it is a weekly release, unlike other magazines which were included in the questionaire. The plan for my magazine according to these results is to have it based on indie music and mix it between Q and NME. However I don't want my magazine to be based on just one genre and I want it to be a mixed genre magazine like Q, but a weekly version of the magazine. According to GRASS my target audience would be primarily male, but females may have an interest. I am not aiming my magazine at a particular race, however the indie genre of music may primarily be aimed at white british people. The age which i am aiming my magazine at is 15-24 years olds and these are primarily students which places them in socio-economic group E.

The unique selling point of my magazine

I am hoping to create a magazine for the general public who like alsorts of different music. The music which will be talked about in this magazine will hopefully be the genres that we always see in the charts and always dominate at least 20 of the top 40 each week. The age of the audience who my magazine will be aimed at is the ages of 15-24 years old as they are the most popular age group which we'd associate for downloading and purchasing popular albums within the charts.
My magazine will hopefully be a weekly glossy and only be a couple of quid, unlike many major music magazines which charge shocking prices for artists who may have been interviewed ages ago and may have dropped out of the top 10 when it is published. I will hopefully have weekly interviews with major artists who are in the charts and this will be made understandable for all audiences which is why my magazine will be aimed at mixed genders unlike most magazines.

Analysed Band images

The first band cover
  • The music cover i am using is Kings of Leon "Only in the night" from 2008.
  • The front cover is like a shady green colour and is showing all of the bands members faces collaged into one with an eagle put in the middle of the cover.
  • The front cover is eye-grabbing and suggests that the creation of the cover may encourage people to buy the album
  • The small text for the title suggests that they should be recognised through the front cover and that people will pick it up.
My Second band cover

  • This band cover is from Stereophonics Decade In The Sun which is the bands greatest hits album
  • The colour scheme on this album cover is grey and it is a black and white background showing the band looking towards its potential audience.
  • The swirly text on the album cover suggests that the album is unique for the artists and hopefully for the audience.
  • The logo behind the bands title suggests that the band have always used that logo and it is used for advertising issues within the bands publisising within the public eye.

Music Magazine institution

To distribute my magazine i would use is IPC media. This is because it is one of the leading institutions which distibute popular magazines which publish magazines for advertising reasons and to tell the general public about the magazine which is going to be released. I have chose IPC media as i feel my product would succeed with this company and they do magazines of similar context which would suit my potential magazine.

Uncut 87,069 (86,925 / 91,028)
Word 34,280 (33,775 / 33,217)

The three magazines which are highlighted in red are similar magazines to what i am planning to create for my coursework. All the magazines highlighted are rising in selling figures and the most significant of these is the Q magazine. This magazine is what i am aiming to make my magazine look like and it has had a significant rise in selling figures in the past calendar year. This is because it is one of the most popular music magazines worldwide as it has a mix between different genres and it is aimed at people within the 18-28 years age range. However i would like to have my age range from 15 years- 23 years olds and it would contain world exclusives and further features which are based within a music magazine.

Audience Questionaire (questions)

I will ask 10 people the following questions in the questionaire

  1. What genre of music do you like? (Rock, Indie, Pop, Classical, R&B, other....)
  2. What sort of music magazines do you like to read?
  3. Do you prefer weekly or monthly magazine?
  4. How much would you pay for the magazine?
  5. Would you pick up a magazine because of its article or just because of the pictures?
  6. Would you rather read an interview or listen to one from your favourite artists?

My analysis of a general magazine

Magazine Front Cover
This is the closest to how i would like my magazine cover. I would like to aim my magazine at music fans who want to know what all the major artists such as "Kings of Leon" on the front cover have been doing whilst creating their albums or singles which they have released into the charts. My magazine would like to follow this layout as their is all different types of artists who release different types of music and that is the type of audience i am crying out for. The audience i am hoping to specialise in is indie rock as the music is understandable and does not have the loud instruments and music which some rockers use. The audience i am aiming at is the young teenagers to young adults who have aspirations to become as famous as the stars featured on the front cover of this magazine.
The text used on the front cover which contains the bands name appears in the middle of the page with a mix of font that contains edges and is not as bubbly or creative as some bands who release themselves. The text is spread along the page and due to their outstanding success in the UK and USA it makes people want to read even more about the band. The fact with it being a "World exclusive" means that they may be telling the magazine their own inspiration behind the album/single they are about to release.
The other thing which catches inspiration from this front cover is that their is a CD feature within the magazine. This has been done as it contains classic American music which everybody loves and which inspires people to have a good time. The text is also identical to the main title on the page containing "Kings of Leon". This has been done as it is trying to keep the audience interested and facinated to have a listen to it. The front cover of this CD also has a vibrant mix of red and white which is eyecatching and very bright and this will make the potential reader to listen to the music aswell as listening to the music. The other text featured on this front cover contains other interviews taking place in the magazine. This is not as eye catching as it is suppose to encourage the audience to read the other interviews featured within the magazine. This text has been done in bold sans-serif font and this is used to encourage audiences to read the magazine.

Contents Page
This is how i intend to have my contents page. This will be the intended layout, but their will be more pictures inserted than their is currently placed on this contents page. The Bold fonts on the page are used for advertising reasons and they are mainly used to advertise the main feature page in the magazine. The Layout of the page is how i would like my magazine to be like. However mine won't be identical to this as it will have pictures above aswell as below the main feature picture.

Feature Article

This article is a reasonable article, but it would sell copies and would be read because of the acts name. The Picture is also professional and is eyecatching towards the audience. This is because we can see that the headline is in the largest size of text, the subtitles are in a lower cased font and the main bulk of text is in an even lower. This has been used to create a general feel for the magazine and hopefully encourage people to have a read of the article. The article has a very serious feel and as its a serious music magazine which is aimed at fans of indie rock and those who have general interest in music overall.

The Current Top 40 (1/2/11)

The Genre of music i am aiming at being placed in the magazine which i am doing are either R&B or indie rock. I am currently unsure about which genre i am doing, but their are currently 18 songs in the current top 40 which follow the aims and characteristics of the magazine which i am hopefully going to publish and comply with in my coursework and future publication of the magazine.

My Preliminary task

For my Preliminary task i have to create a music magazine. This magazine is aimed at students who like to read a magazine which contains exclusive interviews whilst reading through life in the college. The Magazine i am trying to portray is a factual magazine which contains a mix between interviews and facts about the life of a student.
The magazine is also colourful and is very advertising to the general audience. This a good point of the magazine as the background shows it is going to be interesting and eye-catching to the general audience. The choice of text used is also good as it is punctual and advertising  and it is easy to read, however the background placed behind the text it very detoriating and it kind of clashes with the background image.
To improve this i would fade the background behind the text into the page, so you can see as much of the text as possible without the text background interfeering as much.

Feedback 27.1.11

Well done Aaron. You are working hard on this already. Please continue to work through the research. You need to anlayse the conventions of a real magazine - front page, contents and feature. Also, ensure that yout prrelim contents page sketch is uploaded with the front page - Mike or Nikki can scan it for you if you ask them. Please also book a workshop time for next week with Mike or Nikki.

Conventions of the magazine.

All Magazines have to follow a similar rule. They all have to be either monthly "glossies" or cheaper weekly magazine. They all have to have a certain amount of intent on the front cover and the feature inside the magazine to hopefully encourage people to read the magazine in the future.

Magazine covers are suppose to be colourful and advertising for the potential reader. Profits for the magazines are made by using good, creative and exciting, this has to be done as their is so much competition for the same types of magazines and you have to make your magazine the best around due to competition from other publishers. A colour scheme is also important for the magazine as it is creating an "house style" which makes it appealing to the target audience and if the wrong colourscheme is placed you could be making a big mistake.

All magazines have titles and subtitles on their front covers, these have to be eyecatching and visually interesting and are done to tell the audience what the name of the magazine is and what is featured in the website. This is done to encourage people to open the magazine and read the feature story in the magazine. This text is usually done in creative fonts and various types of colours to encourage people to pick up the magazine and read all the feature stories included. The style of font on the front cover has to reflect the genre of music magazine which you are aiming to publish and sell to the vast audience of the magazine.

The pictures on the front cover, contents page and the feature document are even more important to the audience, then the titles and the features which are included within the website. Some people may only pick up the magazine because of the image and it is vital for the photographer aswell as the publisher that they are going to sell copies of the magazine. The dress code of these celebrities have to suit the genre aswell and made to look like they are part of that certain music genre.

Many magazines have a double page feature which contain a big picture of the interviewed person across the feature page with columns of text either over or at the side of the main picture. This has been done so people can look at the pictures and the text if they wish to have a browse at the text. The headline and the size of text has to be eye-catching and readable by the audience. The celebrities may only do a few interviews per year and these are mainly for major releases or products of theirs which are going to released or have been released in the past.

A contents page in a magazine has to be as creative as the front cover. They have to use dominant images which tells the audience what sort of magazine they are about to read. The images and the text placed in the contents page often determine if the person is willing to read the magazine or not. The images also have to be appropriate to the audience as they can often determine whether the person is willing to read the magazine or not. This means that the contents page has to be perfect or the potential audience will put the magazine back and pick something else up.

My initial ideas

I would like my potential magazine to be aimed at fans of R&B/Indie Rock music. I would however like to aim it at teenagers and young adults who have a potential interest in that certain type of music, my magazine would be aimed at 15-23 years olds or those who have a general interest in that taste of music. I want my magazine to be creative and catch the eyes of the potential reader of my magazine, i also hope to contain enough information to enhance my audience and hopefully see them buying the next issue and keep on buying it.
